Athletics and Cross Country

NGS has an impressive track record, winning four of the last five HRIS Division 1 Cross Country Championships and two of the last three HRIS Division 1 Athletics Championships.

Basketball

Basketball at NGS builds teamwork, problem solving and agility and is a core sport within the school. Students engage from Kindergarten to Year 12 through a dedicated K–3 Basketball Academy and club participation in the Newcastle Basketball Association Winter Competition. Players have access to representative pathways through local gala days, Basketball NSW events, and the Australian Schools Basketball Championships.

Football (Soccer)

NGS Football teams compete regularly in local gala days and state‑wide tournaments, including the CIS and Bill Turner Cups, providing students with opportunities to develop their skills in competitive environments and represent the school at higher levels.

Futsal

Futsal at NGS builds physical fitness and technical skills while providing a place to form friendships and develop a sense of belonging. Primary‑aged students begin by competing in local tournaments, with teams often progressing through successive levels and qualifying for higher‑level events.

Netball

Netball at NGS develops coordination, communication, and game awareness and is a core sport within the school. Students engage from Kindergarten through to Year 12, with an introduction to netball offered in Term 4 of Kindergarten before progressing to club‑based participation from Year 1–12.
Boys and girls are encouraged to participate, with representative opportunities available through local gala days and progressive tournaments offered by Netball NSW.

Oz Tag/Touch Football

OzTag at NGS builds physical fitness, communication, and critical thinking. Primary‑ and secondary‑aged students compete in the local Newcastle OzTag competition, with Primary teams participating in Terms 4 and 1 and Secondary teams in Term 1. Aspiring Oz Tag and Touch Football players can access representative opportunities through local and regional progressive tournaments.

Swimming

Swimming at NGS develops endurance, resilience, and personal excellence through representative competition pathways. Beginning with the NGS Swimming Carnival, students progress to represent the school at local, regional, and state championships. Since 2019, NGS has regularly competed at the highest levels of the HRIS, AICES, and NSWCIS Championships, with students often advancing to compete at the School Sport Australia Championships.

Individual Sports and Pathways

At Newcastle Grammar School, we support the growth of individual athletic talent through clearly defined pathways that connect students to regional, state, and national opportunities. Our programs align with the structures provided by School Sport Australia (SSA) and NSW Combined Independent Schools (CIS), offering students access to a wide range of individual sports including those which NGS might not pursue as a team, such as Baseball, Diving, Golf, Gymnastics, Hockey, Tennis, or Water Polo.

These opportunities encourage students to pursue personal excellence while developing resilience, discipline, and leadership.

Recreational Sports

Recreational Sports offer students from both Primary and Secondary levels the chance to explore a variety of sports in a fun and inclusive environment. Participation in these Gala Day events is driven by the interest and abilities of each cohort, allowing flexibility and variety from year to year.

Recent offerings have included AFL, Cricket, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Rugby 7s, Surfing, and Volleyball, giving students the opportunity to try new sports, build friendships, and enjoy physical activity outside of formal competition. At times, these events may provide pathways for students to represent the school in regional and state-level recreational competitions, fostering teamwork, resilience, and a lifelong love of sport.
