A strong community that makes an impact
Our students recognise that developing empathy and perspective, and being a positive influence on the world around them, is essential in being well-rounded people of influence and purpose – doing good and feeling well. Our students work on projects with local, national and international organisations and charitable causes to engage with a range of issues including homelessness, poverty, mental and physical health, literacy, aged care and disability.
Getting out into the community for service opportunities include:
- Soul Hub and Year 12 winter sleep out
- Vietnam Hands on Humanity annual overseas tour (see below)
- Fundraising for various charities through our House Day initiatives
- Serving at the Christ Church Cathedral Community Lunch (Sundays)
- Clean Up Australia Day, The Samaritans Giving Tree and Community Pantry
- Round Square student representation tailors service needs as opportunities arise, from local to global initiatives
Vietnam Focus
Newcastle Grammar School has strong connections with an orphanage and school in Vietnam which allows students to share in culture, embrace diversity and support others. Students in senior years have a unique opportunity to attend the annual trip to visit these partner organisations. This immersive experience aims to increase awareness of the privilege gap that currently exists in society by gaining a broader perspective of education and life in a developing nation. In addition, students and our families engage in fundraising activities throughout the year to give financial support to the Long Hai School.
This experience allows students to engage with several other rewarding initiatives aimed at breaking the poverty cycle in Vietnam, including Dining in the Dark prepared and served by blind hosts. NGS remains committed to the Vietnam Project and the Long Hai School, with each trip strengthening the relationship between both schools and most importantly, between the students.
