An Evening with Dr Michael Carr-Gregg

We were privileged to host Dr Michael Carr-Gregg as the keynote speaker for the launch of the Newcastle Grammar School Learning Institute for Parents recently.

A world-renowned psychologist, Dr Carr-Gregg spoke on Raising Resilient & Strong Young People: What Every Parent Needs to Know, while earlier addressing staff on The Mental Health Landscape in Schools – What Educators Need to Know. Both sessions were thought-provoking, offering practical strategies to help young people thrive in today’s complex world.

Dr Carr-Gregg’s insights included the importance of resilience and the human capacity to overcome as major factors leading to happiness.

He reminded attendees that some of the best ways we can support children is to encourage them to move their body, do small acts of kindness, talk to someone they like, practise gratitude, go outside for a nature break and play with a pet or stuffed animal.

The launch of the Learning Institute marks an important chapter in the NGS Strategic Plan (2023–25), reflecting our commitment to connecting with research and best practice across education. The Learning Institute will continue to grow, offering high-quality presentations and resources to the Newcastle community.

Special thanks to Dr Carr-Gregg and Ms Jo Sheldrick from SchoolTV for presenting, and Mr Matt Macoustra – Head of School, Mrs Lisa Peterson – Deputy Head of School Learning and Teaching, Dr Alan Parsons – Deputy Head of School Wellbeing and School Life and Mr James Ireland – Head of Professional Growth and Development, for facilitating this strategic initiative at NGS.
