In Years 5 and 6 at Newcastle Grammar School, students work with our Primary teaching staff in the new Union St building at Park Campus. This space allows for explicit and inquiry learning, cross-cohort collaboration and reflects our approach to upper primary education. Teachers focus on further development of literacy and numeracy skills as well as inquiry-based learning in Science, History and Geography.

Our flexible and contemporary learning spaces, with modular furniture and varied workspace options, give students the autonomy to choose their own seating arrangements according to their preferences. This allows a mix of social, collaborative and independent learning, so that students can discover the techniques that help them learn best and helps them take ownership of their own learning journey. It also supports relationship-building with peers and prepares them for the move to secondary school structures.

“Every student in our Primary School has their own pace and approach to learning. This is where differentiation comes into play. Our teachers continue to commit to the process of getting to know each of their students well enough to understand how they learn and apply the best teaching approaches for that individual. It requires a true understanding by teachers, as well as a highly flexible pedagogical approach, to help maximise a student’s ability to flourish.”
Mrs Alicha Dyer, Head of Primary
After School Homework Club for Years 5 and 6
A Homework Club for Year 5 and 6 students takes place after school. This is staffed by Primary teachers and tutors who support students to complete their homework and establish good routines at the end of the school day. In this way, the students are empowered to take control of their own learning experience and aspire for personal excellence.
